Why “Artificial Memory?”

…hypertextual linking existed long before the concept of books. Mnemonic practices were once used to “store” memory in the mind, and choices guided by chance have a long philosophical legacy. Books are like artificial memory, a place outside of our bodies to store information. With the mass reproduction of print and electronic memory, ridiculous amounts of knowledge can be stored and accessed, displacing oral traditions and mnemonics.

— Franklin Cason

Artificial Memory takes its name from the above quote from Franklin Cason's article “The Man from U.L.M.E.R.: Hypertext and Gregory Ulmer” from the November 1998 edition of New Art Examiner magazine. The concept of artificial memory is an important element of my artwork, which explores memory, the interpretation of information, and the duality of ancient/modern ideas and practices.
